What Rory McIlroy’s Practice Routine Can Teach You

When you think of Rory McIlroy, you picture one of the most athletic and consistent players in the game. But even Rory has areas to improve. Recently, he spent three weeks practicing indoors to fix a swing flaw, and his approach offers a great lesson for all golfers.

Rory’s Swing Issue

Rory had a common flaw where his hands got too far behind his body during the backswing, causing the club to get stuck too deep and inside. This led to compensations on the downswing, like steepening the shaft or tilting the upper body—moves that created inconsistency, especially under pressure.

Tips From The TourBringing you tips I've learned from years on Tour to help you play better golf!

How Rory Fixed It

Rory isolated the problem by practicing in a distraction-free environment and focused on:

1. Checking static positions in his takeaway and backswing.

2. Repeating the correct movements to eliminate compensations.

3. Trusting the process and allowing small changes to feel natural over time.

A Drill to Help You

If you’ve had similar struggles, try the Chest Alignment Drill:

1. Start in your normal posture.

2. As you take the club back, pause when your lead arm is parallel to the ground.

3. Check that your hands are centered in front of your chest. If they’re too far behind your body, you’re off track.

4. From this position, finish the backswing without over-rotating or forcing the arms back.

Bonus Tip: Control the Follow-Through

To reinforce the correct motion, practice abbreviated shots like knockdowns. Focus on solid takeaway positions, then hit controlled shots with a shorter follow-through (like Tommy Fleetwood’s finish).

The Big Takeaway

Rory’s approach reminds us that even the best golfers work on fundamentals. Isolating an issue and building new feels requires focus, repetition, and patience. Don’t get distracted by immediate results—commit to the process, and the changes will come.
