5 Simple Tips for Better Control and Consistency
If you want to watch my breakdown of this tip, check it out here!
1. Grip It Right: Align Your Palms
Your grip plays a huge role in the quality of your putting stroke, and too many players fall into the trap of gripping the putter like an iron. The fix? Align your palms so they’re facing each other.
Try this: set up your putt, open your hands slowly, and check if your palms are facing each other. This small adjustment can go a long way toward a more consistent, controlled putting game.
2. Tuck Your Elbows In
Keeping your elbows pointed inward might seem like a minor detail, but it’s a game-changer. Outward-pointing elbows lead to extra wrist action, making for an inconsistent stroke. By tucking them in, you:
Get your arms and hands working together with your body, leading to a smoother stroke.
For added support, try placing an alignment rod under your arms during practice. It helps reinforce that stable, connected feeling you’re looking for.

3. Embrace the Arc
“Straight back, straight through” is a popular saying, but here’s the truth: the putter actually moves in a slight arc due to its natural lie angle. Don’t force a straight line—go with the flow of the putter’s natural arc.

4. Adjust Ball Position
Ball position is key to getting that perfect roll. If your ball’s too far back, you’ll tend to hit down on it, causing a bounce instead of a smooth roll. Instead, try placing the ball just ahead of center.
This positioning lets you make contact with a slight upward motion, giving a cleaner roll.
It’s also great for consistency, especially when paired with balanced body weight.
Try moving the ball forward by one ball length and see how it changes your putt’s trajectory and roll.
5. Use a Putting Mirror
A putting mirror is one of the best tools out there for developing consistency. It lets you see exactly where your eyes, hands, and body are positioned in relation to the ball. Here’s why it helps:
You can consistently position your eyes, whether they’re directly above the ball or slightly inside, which helps you develop a repeatable stroke.
Mirrors provide instant feedback, making it easy to adjust your stance and alignment on the spot.
Adding this affordable tool to your practice routine can make a huge difference in developing a stable, repeatable setup.
Wrapping Up
Improving your putting doesn’t require an overhaul—just a few simple tweaks can make a huge impact. By aligning your palms, tucking in your elbows, allowing for a natural arc, adjusting ball position, and using a putting mirror, you’re setting yourself up for a smoother, more consistent putting stroke. Grab your putter, head to the green, and put these tips into action!
With a little practice, you’ll see the payoff in more controlled, reliable putts and greater confidence on every green.
