The #1 Short Game Mistake I See (and How to Fix It)

⛳️ If you’re struggling with chipping, this is why.

It’s Thursday and you’ve got this coming,

The Short Game Secret You’re Probably Getting Wrong

When it comes to the short game, there’s a huge misconception that’s ruining a lot of golfers’ ability to chip and pitch consistently. It’s something I see all the time in lessons, and after working with my Smart2Move 3D Force Plates, I can measure exactly why this happens—and more importantly, how to fix it.

Misconception: Staying Forward and Staying Still

A lot of golfers believe that for solid contact in their short game, they should:

Set up with weight forward

Lean their body forward

Keep everything locked in place

But if you watch the best short game players in the world, they aren’t just presetting their weight forward and staying there. They actually move their pressure dynamically throughout the motion, and that’s where most amateur golfers go wrong.

📢 More Lesson Availability + A Chance to Work Together!

I’m excited to share that I’m offering more lesson spots this season! If you’re local and interested in in-person lessons, I have a separate email list just for lesson updates, new openings, and upcoming programs. This list is the best way to be the first to know when spots become available—especially as my schedule fills up quickly.

For those out of town, if you’ve ever thought about making the trip down to work together, this could be the perfect time. I offer Complete Game Assessments, which are designed to give you a full swing, short game, and putting overhaul in just a few days. If that sounds like something you’d be interested in, feel free to reach out, and we can set up a plan!

Looking forward to helping more players take their game to the next level this year! 🚀

We’re next up on the tee, let’s go!

YOUR WEEKLY GOLF TIP IS…..

The Key Difference: Moving Pressure vs. Moving Mass

One of the biggest lightbulb moments came from a recent case study with one of my students, Alex. He thought he was shifting into his lead side on his backswing, but once we got him on Smart2Move 3D Force Plates, the data showed something completely different.

Instead of truly shifting his pressure, he was just leaning his mass forward while still applying force to his trail leg. That’s why he struggled with inconsistent contact—he wasn’t properly setting himself up for solid strikes.

This is a common issue for golfers who struggle with:

🚨 Skulling or chunking chips

🚨 Struggling with contact consistency

🚨 Feeling stuck or sliding too much in the downswing

The Fix: Press, Not Just Lean

Instead of just tilting the upper body, the fix was simple:

🔹 Actively press into the lead foot while making the backswing

🔹 Feel downward pressure into the ground instead of just leaning forward

🔹 This allows for a proper transition into the downswing without excessive sliding

Immediate Results with Data to Back It Up

With this adjustment, Alex went from having less than 50% pressure in his lead foot at the top of his backswing to over 70%, instantly leading to better contact, better control, and more consistency.

Using Smart2Move Force Plates allowed us to measure these shifts in real time, helping him see and feel the correct movement.

Why This Matters for Your Game

The difference between moving pressure versus just moving your mass is a game-changer in short game control. If you’re someone who struggles with contact around the greens, this could be the exact issue holding you back.

👉 If you’re local, come work with me and get a force plate analysis of your movement.

👉 If not, find a coach using Smart2Move or try training with a Force Board Pro from SuperSpeed Golf—it’s a fantastic tool to help train proper pressure shifts.

Final Thoughts

If your short game is struggling, don’t assume your issue is just mechanical—it could be how you’re moving your pressure. With the right tools and knowledge, you can make small changes that lead to big improvements.
