Struggle with Posture or Early Extension?

⛳️ This overlooked swing key might be the fix.

It’s Thursday and you’ve got this coming,

🔁 Why “Just Make a Good Turn” Is Ruining Your Golf Swing

I had a lesson outdoors yesterday, and the second I got back to the studio, I dropped my bag, set up my camera, and hit record—because this needs to be said.

If your swing thought is “just make a good turn,” you might be doing more harm than good.

Most golfers walk into lessons expecting quick fixes….

But that’s where things go wrong. Here is how you should take lessons
👉 Watch now

Let’s break down what actually happens in a good golf swing, why that thought is incomplete, and what you can do instead to get into a solid impact position and shallow the club the right way.

🤔 The Myth of the “Good Turn”

One of my students said to me, “Ryan, I think I just need to make a good turn.” He was confident. Then he showed me what he meant—and immediately, I stopped him.

Why? Because a “good turn” alone won’t get the club back to the ball.

His swing lacked posture, tilt, and structure. And he’s not alone—this is something I see constantly.

📉 What You’re Probably Missing: Side Bend

Rotation is part of the golf swing, no doubt. But it’s only one part. Great ball-strikers combine three things:

  1. Bending

  2. Rotating

  3. Extending

And the one most golfers skip? Side bend.

If you’re coming over the top, losing posture, or early extending, it’s likely because you’re not side-bending. Good players keep their posture and maintain tilt all the way to impact.

A Visual That Helps

Grab an alignment stick or club. Hold it across your shoulders or hips.

Now swing down to impact and check the tilt:

  • Is that stick parallel to the ground? 🚫 Not what we want.

  • Is it tilted? That’s side bend.

🎯 Want to Shallow the Club? Start With This

Most golfers think that shallowing is about dropping the arms behind them. That’s a piece of it—but without proper body motion, it won’t work.

True shallowing starts with the upper body.

If you side bend as you rotate, the club shallows—no manipulation needed.

Try this:

  1. Stand in golf posture

  2. Backswing to the top

  3. Start your downswing by side bending and rotating at the same time

  4. Check your posture at impact

🧠 Final Thought

If you’re the type of player who’s constantly told to “just make a good turn,” I want you to shift that thought. A good turn includes bend—especially in the downswing.

Start working this in during your practice sessions. Focus on body motion without the club. Get the pattern right, then layer the swing on top.

Thanks for reading! I hope this helps you connect your range game to the course.
