1. Lower Body Alignment: The Foundation of a Great Swing The first thing to address is your alignment, specifically your toe line. Too often, golfers neglect their body alignment, leading to inconsistent swings and unpredictable ball flights. Even when practicing indoors with a perfectly square bay, players can unintentionally set their trail foot too far back or forward, throwing off their swing path. The solution? Lay down an alignment rod parallel to your target line. This simple step ensures your lower body is correctly aligned and sets the stage for a repeatable, consistent swing.

2. Stance Width: Balance and Power in Every Swing Stance width is critical but often overlooked. Many golfers unknowingly adopt a stance that’s too narrow, leading to balance issues and reduced power. As a guideline, your feet should be shoulder-width apart. For most players, this is approximately 16 inches. To lock in your stance width: use an alignment rod with markers indicating your ideal foot placement. Ensure your big toes are touching the markers before each swing. This quick adjustment guarantees a stable base and allows you to generate maximum force while maintaining balance.

3. Ball Position: Avoid Negative Compounding Effects Incorrect ball position can lead to a cascade of swing issues. If the ball is too far forward or backward, it affects your club path and makes it harder to strike the ball cleanly. Here’s how to get it right: place a second alignment rod perpendicular to your toe line to form a “T.” Adjust the ball position based on the club you’re using.

4. Start Line Awareness: Fine-Tune Your Accuracy When practicing indoors, it’s easy to hit into a net or screen without considering the ball’s start line. This can lead to unpleasant surprises on the course. To simulate real-game conditions: add a visual marker (like an alignment rod) to indicate your target start line. For drawers, aim for the ball to start slightly right of the target. For faders, slightly left. This visual reference ensures that you’re practicing your desired shot shape and trajectory.

From down the line, we add the start line alignment for the golf ball

Why These Fundamentals Matter As golfers transition into the offseason, many focus on technical swing changes. While this is important, those changes need a solid foundation to thrive. Mastering alignment, stance width, ball position, and start line awareness creates a reliable base for your swing improvements to take hold. Remember: consistent setup gives you a chance for the best results.

Take Your Practice to the Next Level Now that you know the four essentials of a proper practice station, it’s time to implement them.
