⛳️ Short Game Help! + PGA Tour Players Chip it how close?!

Golf Never Sleeps #002

It’s Thursday and that means you’ve got 3 things coming,

  • One Golf Tip

  • One Quote

  • Something extra (it’ll be at the bottom)

We’re next up on the tee, let’s go!

One Tip, let’s break down a starting point for your short game

The short game……. a scary part of the game for many. As we start to get into shots that are no longer full swings, the way we set up and execute these shots change. Now, there is certainly some variability in how we can hit these shots, but I am going to run down my standard setup.

Click here, if you want to watch me break this down on video.

  • Stance Width

Your stance needs to be narrow. Having a narrow stance can help limit the amount you move laterally in these shots which is very important. For easy reference, I like using the club head as a check for how close my feet should be. One club headwidth is a great starting point!

  • Ball Position

With this narrow stance, I like having players set up with the ball in line with the big toe of their lead foot. I know many of you like to set up with the ball back in your stance, don’t do it! At least when you are hitting standard shots. One of the biggest issues is when the ball is back it sets the leading edge of your club pointing down into the ground. This can cause chunks (we don’t want that!) I will explain this further in weight distribution

  • Weight distribution

Start from a 50/50 position with your shaft straight up and down (50% of your weight on each foot). Once you have your stance width and ball position organized, move your weight 60-70% onto your lead foot. This will do two things, 1) it will create a little bit of forward shaft lean (you don’t have to move the hands forward on top of this) and 2) it gets your body slightly in front of the golf ball which helps get your low point (where you bottom out in your swing) ahead of the ball. Point number 2 is why we don’t have to set the ball back in our stance.

  • What drives the swing

So we are set up to hit the shot, now what?! Haha. For these shots, I really like to feel my ribcage rotating, but the key is that it rotates around that lead leg (where our weight is). If you start to sway or shift off the ball, you will struggle with contact.

So let’s summarize our short game starting point:

1) Narrow Stance

2) Ball of your big toe

3) Start 50/50, and shift to 60-70% on your lead leg

4) Feel your chest rotating around that lead leg!

One Stat, how close do PGA Tour Players hit it from around the green?!

I know we are used to seeing the players at the top of the leaderboard on Sunday’s chip everything to just a few feet, but what about the average Tour player? With the PGA Tour season just wrapping up I decided to find the Tour average when chipping from 20-30 yards, and it might not be as close as you think… it is 9’ 6”. Now that’s the average of a couple thousand shots hit this year so there are definitely some much closer, but also some much farther. For many average golfers, I often give this advice when chipping “Make sure your next shot is a putt!” You can check out the full list from the PGA Tour website here.

This week's something extra……

Want me to check out your chipping setup? Reply to this email and send me a video and I will let you know what I think!

If you made it here, thanks so much for reading!

See you next Thursday for our tee time!
