⛳️ Stop Slicing Your Golf Shots! Four Key Checkpoints to Fix Your Open Club Face!

Are you tired of watching your shots go off to the right? You’re not alone! Slicing is one of the most common frustrations for golfers. Whether it’s a slice, block, or baby push, that open club face is often the culprit. But don’t worry, we’re here to fix it! Today, we’ll dive into four key checkpoints in your swing to help you stop slicing and start hitting straighter shots.

We’re next up on the tee, let’s go!

ONE IMPORTANT REMINDER

A great reminder to, well, just about everyone doing anything We don't rise to the level of our expectations, we fall to the level of our training!

ONE TIP

When golfers come to me frustrated by their slice, the first thing I remind them if we need to work backward to find the root cause. They always want to look at impact, but what happens at impact is a result of what happens all through the golf swing. Let’s break down these four key positions to see where your club face might be getting out of line.

Checkpoint #1: Setup

Your setup is where it all starts. A common mistake? Misaligning the club face. Many golfers focus on their feet or body position but forget about the most important part—the club face! Before you even take the club back, make sure it’s square to your target. Remember: the club face is king. If it’s off at setup, it doesn’t matter how perfect the rest of your swing is—the ball won’t go where you want it to.

Checkpoint #2: Takeaway

The next checkpoint is the takeaway, often referred to as "P2" (when the club is parallel to the ground). This is where things can go wrong fast. If you roll the club face open too early, it sets you up for trouble later. Instead, aim to keep the club face neutral matching up with your spine angle. If the grooves are pointing up to the sky, your club face is too open! This will lead to compensations down the line, so keep it neutral as you start your swing.

*Keep in mind that “matching up with your spine angle” is important. For those who stand taller, the club face will look more open then someone who is really bent over in their swing.

Checkpoint #2 Quarter back

Checkpoint #3: Top of the Backswing

At the top of your backswing, take a look at your club face and wrist position. If the grooves are pointing to the sky, your club face is open. While some players aim for a bowed wrist, it’s not necessary for everyone. The key is avoiding an open club face. Match your club face to your lead wrist and you’ll maintain control as you transition into your downswing.

Checkpoint #4: Downswing

The downswing is where many slicers focus, but by then, the damage might already be done. As you bring the club back down and it’s once again parallel to the ground, check your club face position. If it’s open here, you’re likely headed for another right miss. Remember, an open club face earlier in your swing often leads to coming over the top, so take care of those earlier checkpoints and you’ll see a big difference.

Wrapping It Up

Let’s recap the four key checkpoints:

  • Setup: Make sure your club face is pointing where you want the ball to start.

  • Takeaway: Keep your club face neutral relative to your spine angle. Don’t “roll is inside”

  • Top of the Backswing: Ensure your club face isn’t open by matching it to your lead wrist.

  • Downswing: Confirm that your club face is square or closed to avoid a slice.

By identifying the issue at one of these checkpoints, you can make the necessary adjustments and start hitting straighter shots. Many golfers overlook these early swing positions, but fixing them is the key to stopping your slice!
