ONE TIP
3 Core Movements You Need to Master!

Before we can control the golf club, we have to be able to control our body. This is something I say to a lot of golfers, and today I'm going to give you three of these core movements that I'm talking about:

  1. Understanding how our pelvis tilts.

  2. The ability to disassociate our upper body from the lower body.

  3. The ability to disassociate our lower body from the upper body.

You can check out the video I have on the topic below, (this is tricky to explain by text, the video is only 5 Minutes)

Understanding How Your Pelvis Tilts

Many players struggle with the concept of understanding how their pelvis tilts. The simplest way to explain this by text is if you get set up in golf posture, can you flatten your back and then arch your back? The driver of this movement is the pelvis. Envision you're wearing a belt. When you get set up in golf posture, where is that belt buckle pointing? Is the belt buckle pointing down to the ground, up into the horizon, or on a 45° angle? For players who struggle with loss of posture and several other swing faults, the ability to control their pelvis is crucial if they want to improve these faults. For a great visual, make sure you watch the video above.

Disassociating Your Upper Body from Your Lower Body

This one is definitely the easier of the two disassociations. Get yourself in golf posture with your arms crossed across your chest. Now try to rotate your upper body back and forth without your lower body moving at all. Keep in mind I'm not worried about how fast you're making this movement or how far you go in each direction. The main goal here is just your ability to disassociate one from the other.

Disassociating Your Lower Body from Your Upper Body

Now I believe this one is far more challenging. In the same setup position with your arms crossed, your shoulders can keep your upper body still while getting your hips to rotate. Similar to the upper body, the goal is not how fast or how far you can turn, but simply can you rotate your lower body without your upper body moving. Many of you may struggle with this at first, but that is totally okay! This is highlighting an opportunity.

Why Do I Need to Do This?

The ability to control your pelvis and disassociate your body is crucial in the golf swing. The inability to do one of these three things can lead to many potential faults in your golf swing. No, I'm not saying this is a silver bullet that will cure all your golf swing faults, but I'm saying when we look at the highest-level golfers, the vast majority of them can complete these fundamental movements without any issue.

A GPS App I am really enjoying

On this week’s episode of the Golf Never Sleeps podcast, I had a great conversation with Eric, the creator of the Shot Pattern. Quickly overlay your typical shot dispersion (aka your 'Shot Pattern') with any club onto any hole in the world, so that you can pick smarter targets, and lower your scores.
