ONE TIP
Let’s Talk about your Golf Grip Matchup!

Every golfer has a grip matchup. if you haven't thought of it this way before there is a specific way that you can grip the golf club with your lead hand and also your trail hand that matches the way that you move the golf club and as a result the way your body moves. This week I'm going to break down this matchup and explain how you can look at your golf grip and consider the fact that you may need to look at changing your golf grip to hit more golf shots online more often.

Like with all golf instruction you see online please keep in mind that everyone's golf swing is different. I'm not recommending that you must do things a specific way, but more so trying to highlight a part of the golf swing that you can look at, and experiment with to see if it can help you improve. If you have any questions about this topic you can reply to this email and I'd be happy to dive into it further.

You can check out the video I have on the topic below,

Lead hand Knuckles:
If you step up to the golf shot and you look down without moving your head around, how many knuckles do you see on your lead hand? The answer will be somewhere between 0 and 4 knuckles. The first part of our grip matchup is establishing the proper lead hand. If you watch the YouTube video that I posted above, you'll see the example that I go through. In most circumstances, players with one or zero knuckles tend to have an open clubface in the takeaway and at impact. Golfers that tend to be on the other end of the spectrum, let's say they have three or four knuckles showing, will tend to have a more closed clubface in the takeaway and at impact.

If you have a particular miss when you play golf, it may correspond with the number of knuckles you can see on your lead hand. This may be something for you to consider this offseason. Now that we've got the lead hand organized, let's talk about the trail hand.

Trail hand positions:
When it comes to the trail hand, it should go on second after you've established your lead hand grip. A simple way I like to explain the trail hand grip is that there are three possible positions it can be in: it can be “on top,” “on the side,” or it can be “underneath.” How these positions will have a matchup that works best with our lead hand grip, but remember this will vary depending on the player. In most cases, if we have a trail hand grip that is more on top, that player will tend to have a more open clubface at impact. A golfer with a more underneath trail hand will tend to have a more closed clubface at impact

What match-up do I see most?
Now, I've seen players with four knuckles and an underneath trail hand, and I've seen players with no knuckles and a trail hand that is very on top. Both of those examples, I would say, are quite extreme, but depending on the player, sometimes those grips are required to help them hit the most predictable golf shots that they can.

The grip that I tend to see the most is what I will call a neutral grip. That is a grip that has two knuckles showing on your lead hand and a side-on trail hand.

What does all of this actually mean?
What this means for many of you is, that I want you to consider your grip before anything else if you're looking to make a change in your golf swing this offseason. Ideally, taking a golf lesson from a golf professional would be a fantastic starting point, because they will be able to educate you on what grip makes the most sense for the way that you move the golf club and the way that your body moves.

So let’s summarize:
1) You should look at what your grip match-up is right now. It might help you understand why your misses go where they go.
2) If you are making a swing change and it involves changing your grip, don’t be afraid of it feeling uncomfortable. If the result is better golf shots, it is worth it!
3) Get a lesson from a Golf Professional to understand what your grip should be for how you swing and how your body moves!

For all things golf

“Everything affects everything”

I said this to a player in a golf lesson recently after we started discussing the path forward for their golf swing. They made the comment that it felt like everything in the golf swing is, in some way or another, connected to every other part of the golf swing. I told him it was, and after thinking about it a little bit more, I looked at him and said, actually, everything affects everything
