⛳️ What I learned from Simone Biles

"Enjoy the Journey"

It’s Thursday and you’ve got this coming,

⛳️ What I learned from Simone Biles

(I know you’ve all been wondering where I have been. With our son and the craziness of the summer months, other things have taken priority. But I am back!)

We’re next up on the tee, let’s go!

ONE TIP
”Enjoy the Journey”

A couple of weeks ago, my wife and I watched part of the Simone Biles documentary on Netflix. The timing was perfect, as we watched it right before the Olympics.

Here it is if you want to watch it, we really enjoyed it!

I had forgotten about what happened during the Tokyo Olympics, where Simone Biles entered as the overwhelming favourite to win gold in everything. Unfortunately, things didn’t go as planned, and she had to pull out of some events. Olympians train incredibly hard for years, and it all comes down to just a few days and a few moments every four years. I can only imagine the pressure these athletes feel, the sacrifices they make, and the sacrifices their families and teams make in hopes of everything paying off on the world’s biggest stage.

After the Tokyo Olympics, Simone wasn’t sure if she would ever compete again. But after taking some time away, she started training again, this time with an emphasis on balance—not just training as many hours as possible, but also making sure she was enjoying the process. The quote that really stuck with me was when she said, "I want to make sure I enjoy the journey."

This resonated with me as a coach, especially during this busy time of year. I have students competing in events locally, provincially, nationally, and even internationally. Many of them are returning for their club championships. We often put so much pressure on ourselves and build up so much anticipation to compete that we forget to enjoy the journey. Whether you're 14, 34, or 74 years old, we never know when it will all end. Not to be cryptic, but we don’t know when a change in circumstances, an injury, or something beyond our control might end our time on the golf course.

Everyone’s journey is different, with different goals and at different stages of development. But something we can all take away from one of the greatest Olympians and athletes of all time is that we need to enjoy the journey. Whether you're a junior golfer chasing a scholarship, an average golfer balancing work, family, and golf, or a retired golfer trying to play your best, enjoy the journey.

So as you think about your next practice session, your next round with your buddies, or your next tournament, remember that we never know when our journey will end. Be thankful for the opportunity to play this wonderful game, and make sure to enjoy the journey you're on.
