The Problem with “Shoulder-Width Apart”

The common advice to stand “shoulder-width apart” leaves many golfers guessing. Most players don’t know what it means, leading to stances that are too narrow. A narrow stance can cause swaying, sliding, and even a loss of power due to limited rotation. It’s time to rethink this classic advice.

How to Measure Your Stance Width

Instead of guessing, grab a measuring tape. Measure the outside width of your shoulders and use this as a guide for the inside of your feet. For example, if your shoulders measure 16 inches wide, the inside of your feet should also measure 16 inches apart. This ensures your legs have the correct angle to provide stability and allow for efficient rotation during your swing. What I mean by angle is that if your stance is narrow and your legs are straight up and down like a 90* angle, it won’t take much for you to lose leverage on the inside of your feet

What do I see when I measure players?
I see a lot of golfers with shoulders 15” - 18”, but many of them have stance width that are only 9 - 11”

The Benefits of the Right Stance Width

Stability: A proper stance width gives your legs the support needed to handle pressure during your backswing and downswing.

Rotation: Wider stances reduce lateral movement, allowing for more efficient rotation.

Power: By eliminating sway and ensuring proper weight transfer, you can generate more clubhead speed.

Simple Drills to Train Your Stance

If you’re practicing indoors this offseason, tools like the “DownUnder Board” can help establish the right stance width. Alternatively, mark your alignment rods to visually check your stance during practice.

Final Thought

Don’t underestimate the importance of stance width in your golf game. Take a moment to measure your shoulders and your stance, and see if a slight adjustment improves your stability and consistency. A wide enough stance could be the key to better ball striking and reduced lateral movement.
