Hit a Draw? Not With This Grip Mistake
⛳️ The trail hand myth that’s holding you back—and how to fix it.
It’s Thursday, and you’ve got this coming,
Why Your Right Hand Grip Isn’t Fixing Your Slice (And Might Be Making It Worse)
Hey folks, welcome back.
Let’s talk about a big misconception that keeps popping up online—and in my lesson tee.
There’s this widespread idea that if you place your right hand more underneath the club, you’ll automatically close the club face and hit a draw. But I’m here to tell you… that’s not always the case. In fact, for many players, it does exactly the opposite.
So let’s break it down.
❌ The Grip Myth
Recently, I had a player come in with a trail hand that was way underneath the club. The theory was, “this is how you square the face.” But here’s what actually happened:
His takeaway was too far inside
His clubface was open early
And he came over the top trying to recover
We flipped that grip—moved his right hand more on top—and everything changed. Why?
Because his body and swing plane needed a different matchup.
🧠 Think Matchups, Not Just Mechanics
There’s a difference between theory and application.
Players with a longer wingspan relative to height often swing more upright. Those with shorter arms tend to swing flatter.
That has real implications for your grip.
A flat, around-the-body swing might benefit from a trail hand that’s more neutral or slightly under
A more upright swing plane often works better with the trail hand more on top
This matchup affects your takeaway, clubface control, and how you approach the ball in transition.
🎯 Two Big Mistakes from an Underneath Trail Hand
Too Inside on the Takeaway:
Players with an underneath grip often roll the club inside early, opening the face.
Timing Nightmare:
Even if they swing on plane, they’re stuck relying on a last-second flip to square the face.
That’s not consistent, and it’s not powerful.
Summary
If you’re slicing the golf ball:
Look at when the clubface is opening
Check your takeaway
And most importantly, make sure your grip, swing plane, and body structure are working together
It’s not just about copying grip tips from social media. It’s about finding the right combination for YOU.
Let’s keep building better swings—one checkpoint at a time.
