Before You Work on Shaft Lean... Watch This

⛳️ Your backswing sets everything up.

It’s Thursday, and you’ve got this coming,

Stop Fixing the Downswing — Fix This First

A lot of golfers jump straight to downswing mechanics:

  • “Shallow the club.”

  • “Get more from the inside.”

  • “Add shaft lean.”

But here’s the reality:

👉 A great downswing starts with a great backswing. If you get out of position early, the downswing becomes a rescue mission.

One of the biggest early mistakes I see?

Swaying off the golf ball in the backswing.

Most of the time, it comes from misunderstanding the trail leg.

The Real Key: How Your Right Foot Applies Force

Most players try to “brace the right leg” by pushing straight down.

The problem?

That down-and-up force does nothing to stop lateral movement — so you sway back, then rush forward late and lose sequence.

The correct move:

👉 Your trail leg pushes diagonally — not down.

That opposing force (lead leg pushing one way, trail leg pushing the other) keeps you centered and helps create rotation instead of slide.

When you do this right, you’ll feel like:

  • You’re more centered

  • The club gets around you easier

  • You don’t have to “fix” anything late in the downswing

Try This: The Half-Step Drill

  • Start narrow

  • Begin your takeaway

  • Step your trail foot back into stance as the club moves

If you stay centered — you’re doing it right.

If you sway — reset and exaggerate.
