The way you set your trail arm (right arm for right-handers) on the golf club can drastically impact your alignment and, ultimately, your ball flight. This simple adjustment can help fix common issues like slices and over-the-top swings without drastically changing your entire swing.

Why Trail Arm Position Matters

Many golfers unknowingly set their trail arm on top of their lead arm during setup, which opens up the shoulders and misaligns the upper body. This open setup often leads to a slice or an outside-to-in swing path, especially for players who struggle with coming over the top.

Common Mistakes in Trail Arm Position

Here’s what I see regularly:

  • Right Arm on Top: Many golfers place their trail arm (right for right-handed players) over their lead arm, forcing the shoulders to open up. This leads to an alignment where the upper body points left of the target.

  • Open Shoulder Alignment: Starting with open shoulders makes it easier to swing over the top, often resulting in a slice or weak shot to the right.

Fixing Your Trail Arm Position

The goal is to neutralize the shoulders by adjusting the trail arm setup. Here’s how:

  1. Grip From Underneath: When you set your trail hand on the club, avoid placing it on top of your lead hand. Instead, bring it from underneath, creating a more neutral forearm position. This keeps the shoulders square to the target and encourages a more on-plane swing path.

  2. Use the Semicircle Setup: Another effective tip is to walk into the shot in a semicircle motion, bringing the trail arm from underneath as you grip the club. This helps close the shoulders slightly, aligning the upper body more accurately to the target.

With my lead on, I place my right hand on the club coming from “underneath” instead of placing it on top, which often leads to open shoulders!

Checkpoints for a Better Setup

  • Trail Arm Position: Make sure your trail arm isn’t too high or on top. Keep it neutral or slightly under.

  • Shoulder Alignment: Check that your shoulders are square or slightly closed to the target line.

  • Grip Feel: Practice gripping with the trail hand coming from underneath to reinforce this position.
