Are You Losing Power in Your Swing?

⛳️ A simple force timing fix could be the key to unlocking effortless distance.

It’s Thursday and you’ve got this coming,

Unlocking More Speed – A Case Study on Timing & Force in the Golf Swing

How Smart2Move Force Plates Helped One Golfer Gain 7 MPH Clubhead Speed

When working on swing changes, it’s easy to focus on positions—grip, takeaway, and backswing mechanics—but sometimes, the biggest improvements come from understanding how and when we apply force.

In this case study, we take a deep dive into a recent lesson with one of my students, Finlay, where we used Smart2Move Force Plates to unlock hidden clubhead speed. His original baseline with an 8-iron sat at 85-86 mph, but after making key adjustments, we saw a peak clubhead speed of 93 mph—a game-changing increase of nearly 7 mph!

YOUR WEEKLY GOLF TIP IS…..
How Smart2Move Force Plates Helped One Golfer Gain 7 MPH Clubhead Speed

What Was Happening in the Swing?

Finlay’s backswing had been a major focus in our previous lessons. He had been lifting his arms too much, which led to clubface control issues and inconsistency in ball flight. After refining his backswing and takeaway, we were happy with the structure—but as we shifted our attention to his downswing, something unexpected happened:

💡 His clubhead speed dropped.

At first, this might seem like a negative effect of the swing changes, but the real issue was when he was applying force—not a lack of effort.

Using the Smart2Move 3D Force Plates, we identified that Finlay’s vertical force application was too late in the downswing. He was applying the right amount of force, but the timing of his left-leg push was happening closer to impact—reducing efficiency and causing compensations.

The Fix: Pushing Earlier, Not Harder

Instead of increasing effort, we focused on adjusting the timing of his lead leg push. Here’s the sequence we worked on:

✔️ At the top of the backswing, we cued Finlay to start pressing into the ground with his lead foot sooner.

✔️ Instead of waiting until his arms started coming down, he initiated the push from his left foot earlier in transition.

✔️ We didn’t need to increase the force—just shift when it was happening.

🚀 Result: His clubhead speed jumped from 85 mph to 91 mph—just by changing his timing!

Final Tweaks & The Big Breakthrough

Once we saw the first speed jump, I encouraged Finley to test his limits. I asked him:

👉 “What’s the worst that could happen if you push earlier and harder?”

With that adjustment, his clubhead speed spiked to 93 mph, marking a 7-8 mph increase from his starting point.

📊 Key Takeaway from the Data:

• The magnitude of force stayed similar—he wasn’t pushing much harder.

• The timing of his force application moved earlier, allowing energy to transfer more efficiently.

• His improved sequencing led to better ball striking and more effortless speed.

The Big Lesson: When You Push Matters More Than How Hard You Push

This case study proves a crucial lesson for golfers and coaches alike:

🔥 Swing changes can have unexpected effects on other areas of the game.

🔥 It’s not just about positions—it’s about sequencing and force application.

🔥 With tools like Smart2Move Force Plates, we can measure, adjust, and optimize performance with precision.

Finlay’s gains were not from swinging harder, but from making his movements more efficient. If you’re looking for ways to unlock hidden speed in your game, understanding when to apply force might be the missing piece.
