ONE TIP
6 Things I learned this year!

After a very busy year, I took a little bit of time to reflect on 2023 and come up with some key takeaways. Some of these are new takeaways, and some are things that I was reminded of throughout the year.

I dive into this topic deeper in the video below, check it out!

Number 1: Never assume someone understands what you're trying to communicate.

This is something that I constantly try to remind myself of. I've had many students that I've worked with for a long period of time, and I fall into the trap of assuming that they understand something that I'm trying to communicate to them or assuming that they already know or understand something. As a coach, I am constantly reminding myself to prioritize communication with all of my players. The more that we communicate, the better understanding we have, and the more we can progress. If you're a golf coach, I hope this resonates with you. If you're a golfer taking golf lessons, I hope you always keep in mind that if you do not understand the information that you're getting, ask for clarification!

Number 2: Explore other sports; there's so much to learn!

As a golf coach, I have so much to learn from other sports, and this year I was fortunate to take some really good things away from two fantastic coaches. A few months ago, I was introduced to Jump Guy Thai; he is one of the world's leading coaches when it comes to helping athletes jump higher. It really opened my eyes to a different side of coaching and a different way of learning. I got smarter that day, and I took some great information to help my students.

A couple of weeks ago, I was in Ottawa for the PGA of Canada National Conference. During one of the breakout sessions, we had a presentation from a national basketball coach. I took so much away from this presentation, and to be honest, it was refreshing hearing a coach in a different sport talk about how they develop their team.

Number 3: Trying new things is rarely a bad idea.

This year was a very busy year for me, and I took on three new projects. I committed to posting more on social media, started a podcast, and also began a weekly newsletter. I had been thinking about a couple of these for quite some time and finally just decided to do it.

My message to all of you is that you would be better off trying something and knowing if it's going to work or not, instead of not trying it and just sitting back wondering.

Number 4: You cannot take care of your body enough!

This one might seem like an obvious one, but it's something that I'm reminded of every single year. With my golfers, those who are committed to taking care of their bodies always seem to have better golfing seasons, they play more golf and better conditions and suffer less pain. This is also true for me. I recently turned 37 years old, and I have to say that this year I played more golf with less discomfort than I normally have in previous years. This has a lot to do with my focus on taking care of my body before, during, and after my rounds of golf.

Number 5: Coaches, you have to spend more time watching your golfers compete!

I'm always pushing myself on this one. Unfortunately, so many golfers take lessons and never get to spend time on the course with their coach. This is something that I commit to doing with all of my golfers and will always continue to push to spend more time on the golf course with them. Whether it be watching them compete or playing with them, this time is so valuable to help golfers shoot lower scores. It's very often that a player at a lesson won't know or understand exactly what they need to do to improve their golf game and shoot lower scores, and as a result, time on the driving range gets wasted and does not lead to results. I've had so many instances where playing nine holes with a golfer has completely shifted what our priorities are and how our lessons are shaped. It's something I did a good job of in 2023 and is something I'm going to continue to do more of in 2024.

Number 6: Padraig Harrington loves Diet Coke!

Alright, I left kind of a funny one till the end. I was fortunate to spend some time with Padraig this year at a content shoot for Super Speed Golf. He has done such great work pushing himself to continue to increase his club head speed even at 52 years old. It was a fantastic day; I learned a lot from him and watched him head golf balls, talk about the golf swing, and discuss his training.

On Improvement!

I came across this quote and it struck a chord with me. Regardless of what we are trying to be successful at, our personal life, our work, or our golf game, these two beliefs are a fantastic starting point!
